Nikita Agarwal, final year undergraduate in Computer Science and Engineering at NIT Durgapur

Hello everyone, this is Nikita Agarwal, a summer student from India. I am currently pursuing my bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from NIT DURGAPUR, West Bengal, India. When I learnt that I was selected for CERN's summer school I was the happiest person on earth! It was the first time I was leaving from India for becoming member of a successful organization with the reputation of CERN. I came here in the mid of May, 2012 and was here till mid of July, 2012.

It was a dream that finally come true to enter the premises of CERN and work here, giving a very little contribution to this large project. I worked in the ALICE Department on the project of implementing new commands in the AliEn (Alice Environment) Shell. Since it was related to my field of study, I enjoyed my work here. I learnt many things while doing my project, which included knowing about the grid computing and how the data is distributed worldwide. It gave me an experience to work in a research field which will help me in my higher studies.

Attending the seminars and lectures, visiting the experimental sites and ALICE control room all added more interest and inspiration to work. Going to Restaurant 1, in the main building for lunch and meeting new people and discussing ideas about the work was so exciting. Each time it felt that I have learnt some more. During the weekends we used to go to Geneva city with friends, summer sightseeing and enjoying Switzerland’s chocolates and food.

"It is a completely new world inside CERN. Varied in place, culture and thoughts but with a common goal in mind, to unveil the mysteries of physics and understand the universe a little more."

Here I met people from all different places, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania, Spain, France, New York and India of course. It was such a pleasure meeting people from the world and knowing their work and background. I have lots of beautiful memories and experience to carry back to my homeland.
