Rutherford Appleton Laboratory: New ALICE Associate Member

by Renato Turchetta. Published: 14 January 2013

Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is a national laboratory in the UK. It is owned and operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), one of the seven UK Research Councils. STFC is one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary research organisations, supporting scientists and engineers world-wide. It operates world-class, large-scale research facilities, provides strategic advice to the government on their development, and manages international research projects in support of a broad cross-section of the UK research community.

Reine and Michaela: Upgrading the LHC for asymmetric collisions

by Panos Charitos. Published: 22 January 2013

Reine Versteegen (CERN Fellow) and Michaela Schaumann (PhD Student) are closely working with John Jowett in the heavy-ion programme at CERN in getting protons and lead-ions colliding at the LHC. These asymmetric collisions pose technical challenges for the experiments related to numerous effects that appear due to the different charges and energies of the two beams. We met Reine and Michaela and discussed with them about their motivation and the challenges they faced before the proton-lead run.

Wiedemann and Antinori: Proton-lead collisions physics perspectives

by Panos Charitos. Published: 22 January 2013

Urs Wiedemann, CERN theoretical physicist, explains the importance and the main goals of the proton-lead run for the heavy-ion physics program of CERN.

ALICE Physics Coordinator, Federico Antinori, discusses the physics goals for studying proton + lead ion collisions at the LHC before the upcoming upgrade shutdown
