Young Italian physicists at IFAE 2013 in Cagliari

by Rosario Nania. Published: 17 May 2013

The annual INFN meeting "Incontri di Fisica di Alta Energia", IFAE 2013, was held in Cagliari from 3 to 5 April 2013.

The meetings of this series include presentations and posters which cover results from collider experiments (LHC, Tevatron, Belle, Babar ...) as well as underground experiments (from the Gran Sasso National laboratory, LNGS) and astroparticle physics ( AMS, FERMI, a.o). Together with experimental results there are also several theoretical presentations and review talks which make a complete panorama of INFN activities in high energy physics.

Student's Service Tasks

by Panos Charitos. Published: 17 May 2013

The ALICE Collaboration Board decided that PhD students who have started working with ALICE after January 1st 2012 should dedicate six months of work to a service task; namely a task that will not be directly related to their thesis work but will be for the benefit of the Collaboration.

In the past few months a list of tasks has been identified and an effort has been put in building a user-friendly web interface. In the meantime the activity can start “manually”, with Resource Coordination keeping track of the overall progress, according to the following procedure:

ALICE MATTERS is introducing a new column, entitled "Career steps with ALICE" that will host the profiles of ALICE members who recently got a new post and will continue working with ALICE. New post-docs as well as people who got a permanent job are invited to share with us their stories and describe their career path. We look forward to hearing from you.

Luigi Vanucci: In Remembrance

by Renato Angelo Ricci. Published: 17 May 2013

Suddenly, so much unexpected as disconcerting, the sad news came to us at the Legnaro Laboratory and immediately after addressed to the Alice and INFN communities: Luigi Vannucci, our friend and colleague, passed away , on Friday April 18 , just during a  cardiac test, leaving all of us completely astonished and distressed. His death has particularly shocked all those who had the chance to really know and love him as a physicist and as a man.

CERN-Latin American School organized by the ALICE/Peru group

The 7th CERN – Latin America High Energy Physics School (CLASHEP) was hosted this year by PUCP in Arequipa, Peru, from 6 to 19 March.

The 2013 CLASHEP was attended by 69 students coming from 18 countries including 19 students from Peru.  With its record-breaking attendance and strong international spirit, this year’s CLASHEP is another sign of the country’s growing particle physics community that is reflected in the collaboration of PUCP in the ALICE experiment as well as in experimental neutrino physics.
