ALICE new website

by Panos Charitos. Published: 24 March 2015

In an effort to enhance the experiment's already strong online presence the ALICE Outreach team developed a new ALICE website. It presents information on the experiment, the physics explored, the different detectors and systems, as well as the results that have been published. There was a lot of work to be done: written material was reorganised, photo galleries were updated, broken links were fixed. The new website is easily manageable, as it was made in Drupal 7, a Content Management System supported by CERN.

ALICE warms with cosmics

After almost two years of intense and fruitful maintenance and upgrade activities at Point2, ALICE started its official 2015 data taking period detecting cosmic events.

Adieu Alejandro Toledo

The Brazilian science suffered a great loss on 21/02/2015 when Prof. Alejandro (Alex) Szanto Toledo, the ALICE Brazilian group team leader, passed away.

Alex was a professor at Universidade de São Paulo (USP) for more than half a century; having actively contributed to various landmarks in the history of the institute, where he was director and also acted twice as head of the nuclear physics department.

Focus on Bastian Bathen

I am a postdoc at the University of Muenster in Germany and currently period run coordinator of ALICE. I came at CERN for the first time in 2007 as young PhD student, when I took shifts during beam tests with the ALICE Transition Radiation Detector at the Proton Synchrotron. I had just started my PhD studies in Muenster and didn't actually know where to find the control room or the cavern when I made my first visit at Point 2, and I had no idea that I'll come back three times for considerable periods of time in the following years.

Meet Mario Sitta

I graduated in 1991 with a thesis on cosmic ray composition in the MACRO  collaboration (an underground experiment in the Gran Sasso National
Laboratories). After six months spent there, I did my PhD thesis in the  same experiment, searching for cosmological magnetic monopoles exploiting their properties of catalyzing the proton decay.

Deepa Thomas: winner of the ALICE Thesis Award

by Panos Charitos. Published: 24 March 2015

During the last Collaboration Board, the ALICE Thesis Award Committee presented Deepa Thomas with the ALICE Thesis Award for her thesis "Jet like heavy-flavour particle correlations in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions in ALICE" under the supervision of Prof. Andre Mischke. We met Deepa and asked her about her research project and future plans.

4th ALICE ITS upgrade, MFT and O2 Asian Workshop 2014

by Panos Charitos. Published: 24 March 2015

The 4th ALICE ITS Upgrade, MFT and O2 Asian Workshop took place in Pusan, South Korea, on 15-16 December 2014. It was the first to combine the ALICE ITS upgrade with the O2 project and the MFT upgrade. Following the success of the previous workshops, this biannual meeting offers groups from East Asian countries that participate in the ALICE upgrade projects for the new ITS, MFT, and O2 the opportunity to meet, discuss, and present their progress and plans.
