Physics data taking with some hiccups

by Virginia Greco and Kristjan Gulbrandsen. Published: 20 August 2018

This last month, the LHC and the ALICE experiment experienced some issues, which made the amount of data recorded decrease. Restored the normal working conditions, the LHC is now delivering proton collisions at 13 TeV energy in the centre of mass and ALICE is taking standard triggered data and planning future tests.

From Slovakia (and Russia) with love: interview with Karel Safarik

by Virginia Greco. Published: 20 August 2018

The ALICE collaboration has recently celebrated the retirement of Karel Safarik, a brilliant physicist who participated in the inception of the experiment and played an important role in its development. Born in Bratislava, in Slovakia, Karel pursued his research career first in the Soviet Union, then in France and finally at CERN, where he has spent the last 25 years.

We interviewed him to learn more about his experience, interests and future plans.
