Dear colleagues,

It was with deep concern that we learned of the devastation caused by the major earthquake and the related tsunami on Friday 11 March in northern Japan.

Our thoughts go out to our friends and colleagues at our partner institutes in Japan, as well as to our colleagues here at CERN with families and friends in Japan. We have begun to receive news from KEK and J-PARC, the two labs closest to the epicentre, indicating that while there has been damage to facilities, personnel on site at the time of the earthquake are safe. We will continue to bring you updates as we receive news.

In the meantime, we have decided to open an account for people wishing to make donations to help the people affected by the earthquake living in the vicinity of our partner labs. We encourage you to contribute generously, and will make the funds received available to those communities through our partner institutes.

On behalf of the CERN Management and Staff

Rolf Heuer, Director-General, Michel Goossens, President of the Staff Association
