On the 1st of September 2016 Dr Paolo Giubellino, ALICE Spokesperson, received a Honorary Doctorate Degree in Science (Physics) from the Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), Bangkok, Thailand.

The event took place at the Sra Prathum Palace, Bangkok. After a citation of honour, presented by Professor Dr Prasart Suebka, Rector of Suranaree University of Technology, the Honorary Doctorate Degree in Physics was conferred to Dr Paolo Giubellino by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

A second official ceremony took place immediately after the conferment ceremony, during which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Dr Paolo Giubellino, representative of the ALICE collaboration, and Professor Wing Commander Dr Sarawut Sujitjorn, Director of the Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI), Thailand. A brief report on the Memorandum of Understanding was given by Dr Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister of Science and Technology of Thailand.

“ALICE proudly accepts SLRI, Thailand, to its research community, and is very much looking forward to more future collaborations. SLRI is a key to the success of this innovative detector for the ALICE Inner Tracking System. It is for me a great honour and pleasure to be here today for this ceremony which formalizes the participation of the Synchrotron Light Research Institute in ALICE. Our collaboration with Thailand is in the beginning phase. The project has started with SUT in 2012 and has expanded to include TMEC, KMUTT and now SLRI. Yet it is already a remarkable success story of both science and technology, and has great visibility internationally. Given the impact and quality of the activity at SLRI and the prospects of further development of common activities, it was natural that the cooperation be formalized with an official membership” – said Paolo Giubellino during the ceremony.
