Since 2 May, CERN’s Restaurant No. 2 (R2) has been under the management of Novae – the company who also operates the main restaurant at CERN. R2 is located in building 504 on the Meyrin site.
Novae have been in charge of Restaurant No. 1 (R1) - which is located in building 501 on the Meyrin site - since January 2004. Around 2,200 hot and cold meals are served here each day – with the possibility also available for people to purchase takeaway meals, outside of regular mealtimes, upon request to the cashiers.

The change in operation took place without interruption to service – with all the necessary installations having been undertaken on the weekend before the switch. Novae's first objective in R2 is to offer the same quality of food and service as is on offer in R1 – with the expectation to be serving over 800 meals each day.
An addition to R2 under the new management will be the creation of a new restaurant area – called Côté Brasserie – which will be open to customers, without the need for a reservation, during weekday lunchtimes.
Novae is proposing a daily menu in the Brasserie. Two options are available: a main course, served alongside a small salad and coffee, for 18 CHF, and a main course, salad, dessert and coffee for 22 CHF.
What, however, of the diversity of food, with Novae now responsible for both restaurants on the Meyrin site?
“The chef and the manager in each restaurant are completely free to decide on their menus, taking into account their customers,” says Joel Nallet, the manager of R1, adding: “However, one person is in charge of the quality of the meals proposed in both restaurants.”
Nallet concludes by saying that “…with the management of the two Meyrin restaurants, Novae has now the capacity to answer all requests, thanks to a synergy between them, and in particular with the staff”.
The takeover of R2 has not been the only success for Novae in recent months – with the recent opening of a takeaway corner in Building 501, designed to reduce congestion in the R1 during lunchtimes. A large choice of sandwiches is available from this counter; together with homemade crepes; salads; hot and cold soups; desserts and – as a recent addition - iced coffees and teas.
Further engineering works are planned for 2012 – from which time customers will also be able to pay by credit card in both restaurants.
