New members in the ALICE Juniors committee

In March 2015, Benjamin Hess and Hans Beck were elected Junior Representatives, succeeding Chiara Bianchin and Jochen Klein, who stepped down at the end of their mandates. They will represent the ALICE post-docs and students at the meetings of the Collaboration Board, promoting the active participation of the junior members in decision-making.

ALICE data available in CERN's Open Data Portal

­On 20 November 2014, CERN launched the Open Data Portal, making data from real collision events at the LHC experiments available for the first time to the general public. This project is part of the Organisation's policy of openness, which is enshrined in its founding convention and has contributed to the creation of the open internet, the development of open source, and the dissemination of open access publications. In this framework, the LHC collaborations recently approved Open Data policies and will release collision data over the coming years.

ALICE masterclasses at the Czech Technical University in Prague

For the last four years, high-school students from Czech Republic participated in the ALICE exercise during the International Particle Physics Masterclasses.  The event, advertised as “One day as a particle physicist”, was held at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physics Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

The International Masterclasses 2015, taking place over a five-week period (25 February – 2 April), finished just before Easter . This year saw a record participation with more than 210 institutes in 42 countries. More than 10 500 students were introduced to the fascinating world of particle physics and had the opportunity to analyse data from one of the LHC experiments.

2015 CERN's European School of High Energy Physics

The 2015 European School of High-Energy Physics (formerly the CERN–JINR School of Physics) will take place from 2 to 15 September 2015 in Bansko, Bulgaria. It is organised and sponsored by CERN and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, Russia, together with the University of Sofia, the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BNRA), and the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) in Bulgaria.

New PhD's with ALICE

In the past two months, five ALICE doctoral students successfully completed their PhD theses. ALICE Matters, Paolo Giubellino, ALICE Spokesperson, and Peter Braun-Munzinger, Chair of the ALICE Collaboration Board, would like to congratulate Dr Alexander Kurepin, Dr Andrea Festanti, Dr Małgorzata Anna Janik, Dr Łukasz Graczykowski, and Dr Julian Book for their success and thank the ALICE groups at the students' institutes, as well as the PhD supervisors for their efforts in training the next generation of scientists.
